CHAPTER 14

WHEN THEY GOT TO THE police station, Roni helped Mabel out of the car. Beth pulled up right beside them and Justin and Marie Louise climbed out of the car almost before it was stopped.

Roni was headed for the front desk when Bennett caught her before she got there.

"Roni," Bennett said.

"You're not-"

"In custody?" he finished for her. "No."

Roni breathed a sigh of relief and hugged him.

Bennett hugged her back and then hugged Mabel.

"Where's Tiny," Justin asked. "Do we have to bail him out?"

Bennett was quiet for a moment. "No," he shook his head. "We need to go to the hospital."

"What? Why?" Roni asked.

"That's where Tiny is," he said.

"What happened to him?" Justin asked.

"He's hurt," Bennett said.

"How bad?" Roni asked.

"I don't know yet," Bennett said. "He was-"

Bennett stopped and tried to pull himself together.

"He was what?" Mabel asked.

"He was already fighting when I got there," Bennett said. "And when I pulled up, he-"

Bennett choked back a sob.

"The guy behind him had a knife," he said softly.

"We need to go," Roni said. "We need to go now."

They all ran out to the cars and Roni, Bennett, and Mabel got into the Toyota. Bennett climbed into the backseat.

"Did the police arrest them?" Roni asked as they were driving towards the hospital.

"Yes," Bennett said. "They may need Shirley to go in to identify the ones who torched the shops."

"I'm sure she'll be glad to," Roni said.

"Will Tiny be in trouble for the fight?" Roni asked.

Bennett shook his head. "I don't know, but there were some other guys at the bar that saw the whole thing. I think they told the cops that Tiny was just yelling at them, but that he didn't start the fight."

Mabel sat quietly in the passenger seat. Roni looked over and noticed Mabel was wringing her hands in her lap.

When they got to the hospital, the group ran into the ER and asked about Tiny. Bennett gave Tiny's real name to the receptionist and she asked if anyone was a relative.

"I'm his mother," Mabel stepped forward.

"Let me see what I can find out," the receptionist got on the phone.

After a few moments of conversation, the receptionist hung up the phone. "A nurse will come out to bring you back there in a moment."

Mabel nodded.

Everyone sat down in the waiting area except Mabel and Bennett, who stood near the big double doors heading back into the emergency area.

Moments later, the doors opened and a nurse came out. "Are you Tiny's mother?"

"Yes," Mabel said. "I'm blind, may my other son come back with me too?"

"Yes, ma'am, that's not a problem," the nurse stood aside and Bennett and Mabel walked through the doors.

The doors closed behind them and they followed the nurse down the hall.

"Here we are," the nurse pulled a curtain out of the way and Tiny was sitting on a gurney with his shirt off. A doctor and a nurse were standing behind him looking at his shoulder.

"Look who it is!" Tiny grinned at them. "It's Eli!"

Bennett looked past his friend and saw his neighbor wearing a doctor’s coat and latex gloves standing behind Tiny.
